History of Zavalla ISD

Zavalla Independent School district started in 1899 as the Zavalla Common School District. The first school was built of lumber, had two rooms, and was located near the railroad in the southern part of the town of Zavalla.The first teacher was Jim Sharpe, who also served as school superintendent. There were 75 students who attended the 1st school term.

Zavalla Independent School District is located near Sam Rayburn Lake in deep East Texas. It is situated 10 miles south of Huntington, 21 miles south of Lufkin and 19 miles north of Colmesneil. Click for map. Zavalla Elementary school has approximately 236 students and 22 teachers/Instructional aides with a class size ratio of 22:1. Zavalla High School has 243  students with 25 teachers/Instructional aides.
